How come Sejal gets to assign the topics?
you should make the three members of UBIR the leaders of the class!!!!
How about no!
This is different....
Jessica's thesis:
Santiago's personal experiences, shown in the text, are the perfect examples of growing up in a patriarchal environment. For example her father's dominance in the house, her mother's high emotional level, and the arguments between father and mother all display that her father had dominant control over her mother and she and her siblings.
Through careful analysis of the text in areas such as word choice and personal experience, we have come to the conclusion that women hold a more dominant position on the household.
so...my thesis is as follows
The society portrayed by Esmeralda Santiago in When I was Puerto Rican portrays the role of women as that of the healer, the educator, and the giver of life to that of children. Those expectations stiffled who they were, there independence, their children, and there individuality.
New Criticism reveals how the speaker wants to portray their ideas and lifestyle through literary techniques such as in When I was Puerto Rican by Esmeralda Santiago to highlight cultural values of the speaker to communicate their background to the audience.
-Will
The role of men and women in the text show a society where women are the nurturing disciplinarians and strive to show their worth to the men.
Oh really!
Oh really!
In the novel “When I was Puerto Rican,” new criticism reveals the cultural and personal values of Esmeralda, the speaker. The literary techniques such as diction, similes, imagery, and idioms shed light on the environment in which the speaker grew up as well as her thoughts and feelings of what was going in her life. The speaker communicates her childhood upbringing by using these techniques.
In response to Queesh's comment...
I think that your thesis is good. I like how you provided examples in the theis, however, I think that the way you used those seems like you're going to be discussing them in the essay as seperate paragraphs.
In the novel When I was Puerto Rican , Esmeralda Santiago portrays the hardships of the people of Puerto Rico through their distrust of gringos , the way that the American culture is forced upon them, beginning with the children, and the lack of an economically-strong society.
Throughout the book, "When I was Puerto Rican" by Esmeralda Santiago, new criticism reveals how the speaker highlights cultural values and feelings by using literary techniques such as metaphors, similes, imagery, diction, and idioms in order to communicate her cultural childhood and explain how it has affected her in her adult life.
In response to ubir-Will...
I like how you included your type of Literary Analysis in the beginning of the thesis. It allows those familiar withit to further comprhend your thesis.
In When I Was Puerto Rican, by Esmeralda Santiago, New criticism reveals literary techniques that are used to contrast Puerto Rican cultural values and aspects to American cultural values and aspects to reveal how one is inferior to the other. Literary techniques are also used to help describe the individual feelings of the protagonist to reveal how she views certain events.
The speaker, in When I Was Puerto Rican, reveals and highlights the cultural values and feelings of the speaker and society through the literary techniques of metaphor, similes and diction to explain its effect and impact on the chldhood and growth of the speaker.
in response to Mariha's thesis...
I think you should provide examples for the ways that the text shows the mother nurturing her children, maybe something about her *large* mumber of children.
Other than that...it was a great thesis! GOOD JOB MARIHA!!!!!
Mariha, I like the thesis that you wrote because I was compact, yet fully covered the bases to understand the role of women. I also liked the big word “disciplinarians.” Also agree that women work hard in the novel to show what they’re capable of. My only suggestion would be to add another line showing what the role of men is as a small juxtaposition.
In response to Sagar Faldu,
What is an idiom?
And also, I think the information and examples (diction, imagery, similes) in your thesis clearly support your idea that the book shows Esmeralda's cultural and personal values.
Good job!!!!!!!! = )
By analyzing When I Was Puerto Rican using new historicism and cultural materialism, the author shows America's influence on Puerto Rico, the lack of acceptance of the culture by Puerto Ricans, and the portrayal of their poor society using Esmeralda Santiago to depict the life of a Puerto Rican girl in those changing times.
In repsponse to Jessica's thesis:
Nice thesis but the focus is greatly on Negi's dad. If the thesis was simply on Negi's dad then the first line should refer to an enviroment were the husband/father haad control. For a more encompassing thesis examples should be taken from other areas, such as quotes on what the perceived roles of men and women are in the society of WIWP.
The New Historical aspect of the book shows how citizens of Puerto Rico and US citizens view each other and themselves through distorted lenses based on class, wealth, religion, maritial status, and race.
From the New Historicism and Cultural Materialism perpsective, American influence and the difference between rural and city life prove to be major components in Puerto Rican society. This is evident through the American informational seminars initiated in Puerto Rico, societies view of New York City, and Esmeralda's conceptions of rural and city life.
In response to Venom, the comment is thorough mentioning the historicism and cultural materialism. I agree that the environment of Puerto Rico at the time seemed slightly reluctant to join in the American ways of doing things. Very well done!
In response to tmartinez's thesis:
Good thesis, I like how you clearly outline the expectations and state how they stifle specific areas of their life.
From Sejal:
The theory of New Historicism and Cultural Materialism is depicted in When I was Puerto Rican through America’s influence on Puerto Rico as seen in Esmeralda as well as others who do not want to accept American culture while the American and Puerto Rican society are converging. The Puerto Rican society, viewed as an impoverished and deprived of basic necessities, is not as fortunate as the American society.
In response to Mathaman,
You did a great thesis, I can only see improvement for my own thesis.
I completely agree with Jessica's thesis. The society in which Esmeralda lives is fully patricarchal. Not to mention the fact that Papi represents how much power woman do have infact. He is able to spend time with other women and leave the children and mother at home, often hours and sometimes days at a time. What would occur if a woman acted as Papi did? I am sure she would be ridiculed on a much larger scale, what do you think?
My thesis statement will be posted momentarily.
Chi Chi's thesis:
Anaylzing the text from the the viewpoint of both New Historicism and Cultural Materialism helps to display the struggles faced by each individual within the poverty stricken society that shows the difference of living in rural or urban communities, how outside influence effects the life of individuals, and the viewpoints of many individuals who live in this society.
There is an overwhelming sense that the Puerto Rican people have a lot of distain for and misconceptions about Americans. It is evident through the interactions that the Americans and the inhabitants of Puerto Rico had with one another. Derogatory remarks were used and misconceptions were expressed.
My name is C is Cierra but you could have guessed that. I don't use My Space so, no I don't know how to do this stuff.
Did i miss out on something?
Mr. Donlon - great idea with this assignment.
Sagar - new criticism, itself, does not reveal the cultural and personal values - it examines the techniques used to make the speaker come alive as she speaks about her life, as she reveals her culture.
