Topic 1 - Power a person holds, no matter how strong it is, is temporary and dies with the person. Topic 2 - In the poem, the author reveals what time does to power and how time will always outlast. Topic 3 - Finally, Shelley reveals that the only true form of power is that of nature.
TS 1: The negative characterization reveals the power of a ruler, no matter how strong and ruthless he is, cannot survive.
TS 2: The statue’s present condition symbolically reveals how power through force can never exist.
TS 3: The idea that strong power cannot be held is opposed to nature which has lasted.
Topic 1: The author uses imagery to portray the status as an object that was used to show mans power but will eventually be destroyed by nature due to the passing of time.
Topic 2: Through the king's authoritative diction, the reader concludes that despite his belief that his power is almighty and everlasting, the elapsed time has taken away any memory of his powerful reign.
Topic 3: The author uses structure to show the change over time with the stone existing in itself only to later become one with the earth.
TS 1- The power of one human or a group of humans is a small amount of time in the infinitely expanding universe.
TS2- The power of the Earth and time is infinite because the Earth and time was present before mankind and will always be present.
Despite the passage of time, one’s power and one’s legacy is infinite. In the case of Percy Shelly’s poem, Ozymandias, the statue of the king symbolizes an immortalization of his power. The poet uses imagery to depict the passage of time and the state of the statue and diction to reveal that power and legacy are immortal, even though the physical being is not.
John's group's topic sentences:
1) When man achieves the status of being a powerful leader, it leads to arrogance that causes him to incorrectly believe that he is better than everyone and everything, and will be forever remembered and revered.
2) The power of nature is something that is eternal; whereas man dies eventually, nature survives and prevails, and can never be stopped or overcome for good.
3) The power of nature is much greater than the power of man, and while man's legacy will eventually be forgotten, nature will eventually obliterate everything and rule over the planet.
The poem portrays irony by highlighting the arrogance of Ozymandias while illustrating the initial captivating presence of the statue to its eventual decay and destruction of his statue as well as his memory/legacy.
The speaker creates a contrast in the poem by depicting the idea of supremacy and the idea of its disintegration.
The speaker uses imagery to help the reader visualize the state of the statue and (Ozymandias) Ramses II’s so called eternity as a powerful pharaoh as the statue is dilapidated and weak.
sorry did the wrong things...
TS 1: By the use of imagery, Shelly depicts the passage of time and the immortalization of true power
TS 2: Shelly's use of select diction helps to not only allude to Biblical references but also helps to amplify the message of the poem.
Topic 1: Power once seen in the land did not have a lasting legacy because the barren desert represents the type of power that once took hold of the land.
Topic 2: The traveler plays a role in determining the true meaning of power based on his specifics on the statue and the surrounding area.
Topic 3: The power that did last and the power that did not last is seen through the artifact of the land. The face represents the power that lasted and the rest of the surrounding areas represents the power that did not last.
